(tutorial) Hopscotch Skirt

In case you missed it, I was a
 on Kojo Designs.

Here is the project that I came up with.  It was for me, but you could make it for a child, too!

Like many of you, Pinterest has become a huge source of inspiration for me.

When I was trying to think of something to make for the series,
I found this Marc by Marc Jacobs skirt on my board, from a cool fashion blog called Thread Ethic.
Mine isn't quite as dramatic, but I loved the idea of a checkerboard effect.
...hopscotch...get it?

So I whipped this skirt out
(It is a relatively quick project)
and braved the wind outside to take photos.
{Almost all of them looked windblown and lopsided,
these are the best of the lot...sorry!  That darn wind...}
My verdict?
Amazingly comfortable AND Flattering.
 (The sash hides right-below-waist problem area...)
I think I could live in this skirt all summer long.

(eyeCandy) Reader Projects

We have gotten lots of emails from you lovely readers this past month with pictures of projects you have made from our tutorials! It is so fun to see your projects.  Keep it up, please!

Here are two, stay tuned for more!

This is a really great version of the Petal Dress made by Jodi.  She used a print, which turned out so cute!  She used bias tape for the neckline and sewed the second two rows of petals on upside down, (which then flip down) which gave them more body!
Love it, Jodi!

Barb made a super fun skirt for her granddaughter using the Hopscotch Skirt as an inspiration.  She used a Wal-Mart sundress as the fabric, and used the shirred part of the sundress as the waistband.
Her granddaughter loves it!

(mini-tut) Semi-Homemade iPod or iPhone Running Belt

The past few months, I have been training for this race called the Ragnar Relay.  It is a 12 person overnight relay race, where your team covers 200(ish) miles in 36 hours.  Each person runs three legs during that time frame.  I ran my first one last fall in Napa Valley, CA and it was so much fun.
This past Friday and Saturday was the SoCal one, which started in Huntington Beach, and ended on Coronado Island in San Diego.
Just Finished!

I have never been a runner, but training for this race has really stretched me.  For the first time in my life, while training, I ran more than 5 miles.  Never thought I would/could do that!  Thank goodness I did, because my first run was 5.5 miles uphill. the. whole. time. (in 100 degree weather, I might add)
This was Friday afternoon.  I didn't run the whole time, but I made it to the end without dying!  The next run was at 4am and only 4 miles, and it was great because it was a lot of downhill and nice and cool out.  Finally, my last run was Saturday, at around 4pm.  This one was 5 miles, but it was basically flat and foggy and cool outside.  Much better.

So pretty much all of my training prior to the race was at the gym on a treadmill.  I do this because I just can't run long distances pushing a stroller.  I also don't run at 6am or 9pm, which is what I would have to do without kids.  So the gym it is.  I bring my iPad and watch shows while I run.  It is great.

During this race, however, I needed a way to listen to my music on my iPhone.  I did not want to wear it on my arm, too uncomfortable!  So I googled it, and came across a site that sold these cool belts with attached pouches to carry iPods or phones.  There was no way to order one in time, so I thought, hey...I can make something like that!

I could have made the pouch, but I had too much going on last week in the time before the race.  So I went to Target, and found a cheap(ish) little sunglasses case with a zipper on top.  Perfect size for my phone.  So
I grabbed some 2" black elastic and whipped this out in 5 minutes!

My husband laughed at it, but I wore it on all my runs and it was PERFECT!  It probably would have been better looking if it was neoprene, but it was so functional, it didn't matter.
Like my sweet bandana? It kept the sweat out of my eyes...

Here is how to make one:

(iCandy) Miss Pretty Pretty Product Review

Last month, I posted about the darling Mermaid costume that I found from an etsy shop called Miss Pretty Pretty.
Julie's shop is loaded with everything your kids would just die to have: namely, felt playhouses, or the patterns, to fit over a folding table, and these Mermaid Tails (or the pattern!), that I was giddy over.  I could hardly wait to give it to Ivy for her birthday.  She's totally into dress ups, and pretty much lives in her dress ups daily.  I thought this would be the perfect gift for her...
 ...and it totally is!  It comes with a little crown that matches your tail.  And you get to pick your color scheme when you order your costume.  What I love about this is the wrap-around design which allows the tail to trail behind your girlies, but keeps their feet free to run them around without any hindrance.  AND, heck, it's felt...It's made out of very sturdy felt (not the flimsy see-through kind that easily catches on things and tears; it's made very, very well.
 I'm completely pleased with Ivy's new little dress-up...isn't it rad?!  The only caution that I have about it...and it's probably just my OCD taking over...is, I won't let Ivy wear it outside.  Our awesome sand came right off, but I've dealt with my fair-share of felt, and when it trails along on cement, or whatever, it'll totally ball up, and look ugly.  I think if I keep this beaut inside, it'll last a lot longer!

Yet another cupboard door project for you today...
I'm obviously obsessed with cupboards, and I hope you're not sick of them yet, because I still have a ridiculously awesome stash of oddly shaped doors to fancy up!
woohoo!
Here's the latest and greatest cupboard creation, a quote from my favorite actress, the one and only Audrey Hepburn:
I got the idea from a darling little blog called Sisters of the Wild West...here was their version.  Seeing as I have 2 girlies now, I wanted to make this for my 'Girl Room'

I started with my plain old un-romantic cupboard door and actually sprayed it flat-black first, so that when I sanded it down, some black might show through...
I had my friend Kim from Remarkable Walls design the vinyl for me to match the one I wanted to copy.  AND, super fun, but if you love it as much as I do, you can order the vinyl yourself from her etsy shop {here}
...and...she's so awesome, she's offered to give you guys 10% off your order, you just have to type icandy10 at check out.
{go check out her other stuff in her shop, too...her shop is so fun!}

(iCandy) Fixer-upper dress

I have another Wal-Mart fixer-upper for you today.
I rarely go to Wal-Mart, but there are a few occasions that it calls for a quick trip to Wally World.  I happened to run through the tiny girls department, and found a couple of these terry-cloth swimsuit cover-ups.  They are super soft, and really, my 3 year-old will only wear dresses, so this swimsuit cover-up will serve as a play dress for her.
I love that it's plain.  Sometimes, they craze up cute dresses or shirts with wacky graphics, and I can't stand it!  But, this one is soft and ruffly and perfect.
My mom also happened to buy a little package of these pre-ruffled strips of fabric at Jo-Anns while she was here with me while I had my baby.  I thought the dress would be the perfect project to use with these.  They are raw-edged, which I like the look of on this project.
 So, all I did was start on the side seam of the dress, just above the bottom ruffle (so that the skinny strip covers that seam) and stitched right down the middle all the way around.  When I got to the end, I folded the edge under, and finished it off by back-tacking.  Ivy has worn the pink one 3 times already, and loves it!

(I had a sick little girlie today, so , sorry, no pics of it on her!)

(tutorial) American Girl Doll "Pillowcase" Nightgown

This week my little girl turned 6.  For weeks she has been asking for an American Girl Doll, and I finally caved.  On Friday, I pulled her out of school a bit early, and we (and grandma and one cousin) went to the American Girl Place in LA.  She had so much fun picking out a doll that looks just like her, and one outfit for the doll.

Since the doll was so expensive, there wasn't going to be anything for Emily to open on her actual birthday. As she was getting dressed for bed one night in one of her pillowcase nightgowns, I got the idea for nightgowns for the doll, too.

So Monday night I whipped these out for her birthday the next day.
I used simple fold-over elastic since that is what I had,
but lace elastic would obviously be cuter- about 1" wide.

It is the perfect way to use up some fabric scraps!

Does your child (or grandchild) have an 18" doll that could use a nightgown?

(iCandy) Vintage-Trimmed onesies

Hey guys!
I'm back, but not quite back up to speed quite yet, but I'm for sure feeling good, and my little baby Scarlet is suuuuuch a good baby!  I'm so lucky!
Anyways, in preparation for her arrival, I rifled through my Mother-in-Law's stash of her mother's trims and picked a few of my favorites to spruce up some Onesies.
 I did nothing but trim the trims down-to-size, and then do that elastic stitch, (which looks like a dashed zig-zag stitch) around the neck-line.
...and, don't forget Jen's cute onesies that she made {here}
I've loved seeing little miss Scarlet in them the last couple of days.
So, I just thought I'd share a fun, quick and easy project with you!
I whipped so many of these up so fast, I'd love to give them as a shower gift!
 I hope you had a Happy Easter!
