(eyeCandy) Apple Cider Cups

I've said this once before, and I'll probably end up saying it again, but...
I know we're not a cooking/recipe blog...but you have to have a little creative in you (or a lot) to think of fun things like this:
So, I'm sharing this fun idea because even though Halloween is...in 2 days (are ya ready?)  Still have another month and a half of autumn to enjoy you some fun, yummy apple cider in a very creative cup!
I know we'll be trying it out as soon as we're done moving!
enjoy!

(iCandy) Flower Fairy

Last year, right around Halloween, Emily picked out her costume for this year.  She wanted to be a fairy.  A few months ago, she got a little more specific.  She wanted to be a Pink, Purple and BLUE Fairy. Wow.
So one day, a few weeks ago, browsing around the thrift store, I found a pristine pink leotard in her size for $5.00, and some hot pink satin for $2.00. Nice.
We then made the trip to the fabric store for the rest of the fabric for the skirt.  That was quite an experience.  I started pulling out pinks, purples and blues.  She didn't like them.  So then she says how about this-then, no, how about this.  It seemed to go on for days, and boy were her color choices very interesting.  Finally, she decided on pink and blue, but I talked her into a turquoise blue instead.  (I tried for green, as I thought it would look much better, but not happening!)

So I draped a little sparkly turquoise onto the leotard, added some burnt satin flowers to the shoulder, made a tie-tutu (which was really fun and so easy!) and a petal overskirt, with turquoise leaves.  I found a sparkly butterfly that I added to the skirt.
Then I wrapped up a small wood dowel with tulle, added more tulle and flowers for her wand, and made a garland/headband with floral wire, ribbon, tulle and more flowers.

It is a bit over-the-top, but she feels like a "Royal Fairy Queen" (her words) so I guess I am happy!
(Just don't show me any more sparkly, shiny fabric any time soon...I was buried in it for 2 days!)

I give you:
Davy, Davy Crockett, King of the Wild Frontier
(McCall's Costumes, pattern #4163)
Ever since Max got a little log-cabin playhouse, and a coon-skin cap to go with, he has loved to play Davy Crockett in the backyard...but he's never had a REAL Davy costume, nor a real gun.
This was his ultimate Halloween costume; he knew what he wanted to be on November 1st...2010.

(iCandy) Costume Reveal: ivy

This year, for the first time, I decided I would MAKE my kids Halloween costumes.  I'm always so tempted by those darling costumes at Pottery Barn, but this year, I convinced myself that I really could take a pattern and make a costume from scratch.  (If you recall, Jen's the genius with sewing...I just dabble and muddle my way through.  Quilting, I can do...sewing clothes...with a pattern...not so much, but I'm determined to master it!)
Anyways, so, we had the plans what both of my kids wanted to be...they were psyched about their choices, and I thought I could easily enough create the look they were thinking of.  I bought the pattterns, bought the fabric, got the fun trim...and then we found out we were moving.  HAPPY!  So, little miss lazy-pants-pregnant lady is moving, has 2 Halloween costumes to make all before October 31st (we move November 1st.)
but, I did it!
(well, not the moving part yet...one thing at a time!)
So, here's Ivy...
our little Indian Princess
Ok, so maybe you're not impressed because it's not a crazy-awesome, over-the-top costume that I made my own pattern for....but don't forget, this is not Jen, this is Autie...and this is big for me.  Eventually, you'll be impressed by my sewing skills...but in the meantime...Ivy is thrilled, and that's all that matters!
ps...in case you want to know, I used Butterick Pattern #4171 (size xs)

(Giveaway) Handmade Ruffled Cardigan

Tomorrow Never Comes Giveaway #1

My daughter, when it comes to clothes, is VERY picky. I may love something, and I like to think that I have good taste... but if she doesn't love it, nothing I can say or do will influence her to wear it.

With that said, I have made her several things that she just won't wear.  I ask her, Why don't you wear this? She always says, Maybe tomorrow. Well, like the Garth Brooks song says,
Tomorrow Never Comes
SO... I am going to start giving away handmade items that she won't wear.

I am starting with this cardigan that I made for Project Run & Play. She wore it for the photo shoot and hasn't touched it since.

With how much energy I put into making it, I want someone to get some use out of it!

So if you know a little girl that would like to wear this cardigan, you can win it by doing the following:

(One entry each)

1. Follow iCandy on Facebook
2. Follow iCandy

Please leave a comment for each, and include your email address!

(review) Shabby Apple

We were thrilled when Shabby Apple contacted us to do a review on one of their skirts from their new line Academia: Teachers Pet.  We love the quality of Shabby Apple clothing, always, and were so excited to get to add this to our collection.
Ever since being contacted, we have revived our fervent search for a mustard-colored cardigan, and we thought mustard would be perfect with this skirt.  BUT, we are still fruitless in our endeavors, so we decided to pair it with this cardigan, and this mustard scarf (giveaway winner will be announced Friday, hurry and enter!)  We are calling for the autumn weather around here!
The best part is, Shabby Apple offers free shipping on standard and domestic orders.  They have also come out with recently a new line called sidesaddle that you need to check out!  You will not be disappointed in the quality of their clothing or the modesty of their cut.
We are thrilled with the skirt, please click on the link on the left side bar to access their page, or click here to see the other items they have in their catalgue!

(iCandy) diaper cake

My friend recently asked me if I'd ever made a diaper cake, and if I'd help her make one.  I hadn't made one myself, but I knew where I could find an awesome tutorial!
Hanne did the hard part: picking out the color scheme to coordinate with the rest of her upcoming baby shower, and selecting the ribbon and the paper.  With Lil Luna's great tutorial, this was a cinch!
The only thing we were left wondering after reading the tut was how many diapers, approximately would make a good-sized cake.  So, we guessed, but we just used a pack of 84 pampers diapers ( I think size 1)
I think it turned out pretty cute; nothing compared to Kristyn's, but simply cute.  AND...i really thought it was fun!  have you ever made one?!?

(eyeCandy) Spooky Banner

I fell in love with this idea this week, of how to display pictures from Halloween's past.

I actually managed to take enough pictures as I was making it to have a tutorial for you!
I have created a size 5 pdf pattern that you may download for free,
and if your child is not a size 5, I have included information on how to make your own pattern.

(tutorial) The Making of a Flag

I don't mean to claim to be an expert of flag making, but I was recently asked to create a flag for a local Boy Scout Leadership Training group that a friend of ours was a member of, called Wood Badge.  Most of the time, if I haven't done something before, I would never agree to making it for someone else, but I thought I might be able to handle this particular challenge.
I had an idea of what I wanted the flag to look like, of course, but didn't really have any idea how to make a "flag" from the rectangle of fabric that I would stitch stuff to.  With a quick call to my MIL, it seemed easy, so I thought I'd share with you all what I didn't originally think about, and give you an quick and easy tut on how to make a random flag!
(Not the front...that's nothing...You all already know how to do that...I just traced their logo onto some heat-n-bond, adhered it to my felt colors, and then stitched each piece on individually.)
But the part that makes a piece of fabric turn into a flag...here we go!

(Sponsor Shout Out) Brynnberlee Designs

I love innovative designs that are unique. If I buy a pattern, it usually is one that would be tricky/time consuming to draft myself.  Especially for children.  The awesome thing about Brynberlee Designs patterns, is that they are adorable and unique.  Each design has little details that set it apart from similar styles.

For example, this is an adorable twist on the pillowcase style dress.  I love those split sleeves!

I love this one- the sweet flutter sleeves and pleats in the skirt...

And these ruffled bloomers are different than most ruffled ones I have seen...
what a cute baby gift these would be!
These are just a few of the adorable patterns for sale over at Brynnberlee Designs...Go take a look for yourself!

(mini-tut) Halloween Chic T-Shirt

I think I have mentioned that I love Halloween.  I love the season, the pumpkins, the decor.  I don't, however, love the Halloween t-shirts I see at Target and other stores.

Emily, however, loves holiday tees.  She also happens to have a BUNCH of plain t-shirts that she won't wear- (they are too boring) so I have plans for them.  Soon.

I thought I would start the t-shirt renovation project with a chic Halloween tee. (At least I think it is...)  :)

The beauty of this idea, is that so many different designs could be used.  You could do a witch, ghost, scary tree, or even a haunted house.  You do not have to put these designs on an orange shirt.  I think it works on just about any color, as long as the design is done in black.

Originally I was going to do black lace, but I didn't have any in my stash.  I did have this hole-ly fabric, so I used it instead.  I really like how it turned out.  Emily REALLY liked it.  So I am happy.

The best part? It only takes about 15-20 minutes from start to finish.  LOVE that.

(iCandy) My Continental United States

Well, I'm excited to show you what other little projects I've been up to (I'd say 'during' Project Run and Play" but honestly, there wasn't a whole lot of room for extra curricular activities!) since Project Run and Play came a knockin'.
My kids and I visited my Mom and Dad up in Seattle back in August, while we were there, I got to spend some quality crafting time with my sister, sister in law and mom...THIS is the project that encompassed ALL of our crafting time.  It was seriously time-consuming, but we were so excited about it the whole time we could hardly stand it!
My Continental United States of America
I flew back to Cali with a completed map in my suitcase, but the frame took a while to get, and what with PR&P, this project was sort of put on the back burner...but I'm sooo excited to have it done, and can't wait to hang it up in my daughter, Ivy's room!
We got the inspiration for this project here.  BUT the way she originally did this was to print a map off of the computer, cut out each state, then cut it out again out of fabric...Her idea was fabulous, but I don't think my patience would hang!  So, we cut our states out with our Cricut, (I'd never cut fabric with my Cricut before, and it was awesome) and then after ironing them into place, we stitched around the perimeter of each state.
I omitted Alaska and Hawaii because my frame wasn't big enough to hold them (and this sucker is 2'x3')
Anyway, such a fun project!  I hope you guys are inspired to make your own!

ps...want a new good place to get a good deal on cricut cartridges and accessories, like the 50 states cartridge that I used for this project?, check out this site
ps...i linked this project to a bunch of these fun blogs!  go check them out!

Back to Normal

We just wanted to thank everyone who voted for us on Project Run & Play!

We were honored to be involved in such a great project, and are amazed by the talent of the amazing bloggers who have been showcasing their work every week.  We can't wait to see the finale designs this Friday!

Now that it is over, we are excited to get back to normal here on iCandy... and in our lives.  It sure was crazy, having to come up with something amazing and usually super time consuming every week.  Fun, but crazy.  I am looking forward to watching a bit of TV at night again...(since most of my sewing was/is done in the late hours!)

For those who requested, we will be posting tutorials for some of our Project Run & Play designs over the coming weeks, mixed in with other fun projects and a bit of inspiration/eyecandy as well.
